The Joint Elections Committee (JEC) announced today that elections for the 2014-2015 Student Association, Program Board and Class Council will take place Feb.19-20.
Those interested in running for a position can now view registration deadlines, forms and rules.
The Student Association sent out an email Monday morning to the full student body announcing the release of the dates and deadlines, and linked the complete set of information to the JEC website. Candidates must register with the JEC by 5 p.m. Feb. 6 to be eligible to run.
This year’s election is more than a month earlier than the election last year, which took place on March 20 and 21. Chelsea Lenhart, the chair of the JEC, explained that this date, and the subsequent shorter election cycle, was chosen to prevent either the University spring break, which is the week of March 10, or the law school spring break, which is a week earlier, from interrupting the campaigning.
“Holding the elections post-spring break does not allow for sufficient time to smoothly transition offices,” Lenhart said. “With that, holding the elections before spring break was deemed the best option.”
According to Lenhart, the election cycle is only a few days shorter than those of years in the past and, “This timeline is not without precedent.”
The Marvin Center Governing Board (MCGB) is not participating in this year’s elections. The JEC has one less member this year, as the MCGB had previously appointed one of the committee’s members.
In addition to Lenhart, the JEC consists of SA appointees Vice Chair Zack Speck and Treasurer Marcela Torres-Cervantes, Program Board appointee Secretary Gordon Pera, and Class Council appointee Audrey Lee.
