Illinois native Daniel Egel-Weiss announced his candidacy Thursday for president of the Student Association at The George Washington University.
A junior majoring in political science and minoring in sociology, Egel-Weiss has developed a campaign platform that focuses primarily on student safety, student well-being, and on-campus pride.
Egel-Weiss “seeks to reform 4-Ride by having them send two text messages, one stating ‘en-route’ and the other stating ‘arrived’,” and prioritize pick-ups for students waiting alone over group parties. Currently, all Community Service Aids must check-in at Thurston Hall and report to duty at other locations around campus. Egel-Weiss hopes to find an alternative solution.
“ [The current system] creates a potentially dangerous scenario for the CSAs when they are walking alone late at night,” Egel-Weiss said.
Alongside advocating for student housing rights, the candidate sees a significant need for improvements to the GWorld system. These transformations include “better incentivizing new vendors to come to GWorld by working as a liaison between GW and interested businesses, especially on MacArthur Boulevard” and “eliminating the cost for student organizations that use GWorld machines.” Egel-Weiss also aims to “streamline course advising practices” by having an online chatroom attendant available to answer student questions about classes and other academic matters.
To better engage alumni and boost GW spirit, Egel-Weiss perceives the potential for undergraduate/graduate mentor and tutoring programs. He also desires the creation of a weekly Student Association newsletter.
“[The newsletter would] announce all student organization accomplishments and upcoming events so that more students show up to fundraisers and support each other,” Egel-Weiss explained.
Currently, Egel-Weiss is an Undergraduate-At-Large SA Senator serving as President Pro Tempore of the Senate. He also currently is President of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, and has served on the Marvin Center Governing Board and the Student Dining Board in the past.
Off-campus, Egel-Weiss has worked in the D.C. political arena by interning in the office of Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-05) and serving as a fellow on the Jack Evans for Mayor campaign.
Egel-Weiss becomes the second candidate to announce for President, after Columbian College Senator Nick Gumas announced he would run for the office yesterday.
Both candidates are hoping to succeed Student Association president Julia Susuni, who is a graduating senior. The Student Association elections will occur on February 19th and 20th.
