Nick Gumas, a junior and Student Association Senator representing the Columbian College, announced he is running for SA President Wednesday with the publication on his campaign website, www.NickForGW.com.
Gumas, a political communication and political science double major, said he plans to establish a peer-counseling program, end paying tuition for internship credits and revamp the SA website.
“I want to build on the successful advocacy projects that the SA organized this year, in part by focusing on improving the quality of health and wellness services,” Gumas said. “I’m interested in helping the SA become an organization that helps to connect students to resources.”
Gumas said as an SA Senator he has focused on Columbian College general education requirements, the Student Health Service, nondiscrimination rules affecting student organizations and student space.
Gumas also serves as president of Allied in Pride, a group that aims to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues both on campus and within the community. The New York native cited his ability to work with administrators and other student leaders to accomplish different goals.
“I believe I have a realistic understanding of what the SA can and cannot do, and I hope I have the opportunity to become president so I can continue to work with my peers and the administration to improve the lives of students,” Gumas said.
SA Senator Daniel Egel-Weiss (U-at-Large) announced his candidacy for president of the SA Thursday. Both candidates are vying to succeed current Student Association president Julia Susuni, who will graduate this spring. The SA elections will be held on Feb. 19 and 20.
