GW Hillel presented the Mr. and Ms. GW competition on Tuesday night. The well-attended event was a pageant to raise money for various fraternities’ and sororities’ philanthropies. Multiple fraternities and sororities sent representatives to be crowned with each organization receiving 250 dollars towards their philanthropy.
The event’s VIP judge was Miss Israel 2013, Yityish Aynaw, who flew in from Israel. She was seated with fellow judges, executive director of GW Hillel Yoni Kaiser-Blueth and Associate Dean of Students Tim Miller.
Aynaw gave an opening introduction about herself and her history as an Ethiopian immigrant whose family made their way up to Israel at a young age. She became a lieutenant in the army and was convinced to compete in Miss Israel by her close friend.
The pageant was organized like a traditional pageant with three events. The first event was a catwalk strut, with each contestant putting on formal and then seasonal wear. The second event was a five-minute talent portion where a sorority sister was paired with a fraternity brother and had to do an improvised talent sketch together. The final act was a humorous question and answer session where contestants were asked humorous questions by the MCs.
The event was MCed by one of GW’s improv clubs, [Insert Here]. Two members gave a running commentary on the various events and contestants. The entire improv group also performed comedy sketches in between events.
The contest ended with a brother from Kappa Sigma crowned Mr. GW and a sister from Alpha Phi crowned Ms. GW.
