Crowds of people lined the streets of Old Town Alexandria Monday as the city held its 42nd annual George Washington Birthday Celebration. Decedents of George Washington made appearances, as did Congressman Don Beyer and Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg.
Parade-goer Matthew Oberstaedt said he enjoys these celebrations.
“I always tend to like the music-based groups the most – the Irish bagpipers and marching bands and things.”
Bagpipers are exactly what he got, along with floats from various community organizations, including the American Legion, Boy and Girl Scouts, and local businesses. James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington impersonators walked down the street gleefully as they waved to fans.
The parade is set to go again next year on the third Monday in February.
